The understanding of family lineage is so important to African American families and their connection to enslaved ancestry for obvious reason. This story being told through an actual decedent of Mr. Harrington lends weight to the strength, courage and character of the man who endured much in his lifetime. In reading this book, it impacted me in variety of ways ranging from being sad to elated due to Pam’s detailed portrayal of events. This book is an excellent read and I highly recommend it – R. A powerful and deeply engrossing story of Scott Harrington, a man born into slavery and who, upon becoming a free man, went on to create a remarkable legacy through his family. The family lived through slavery, reconstruction, and the Great Depression, while holding fast to their beliefs and contending with Harrington’s headstrong and at times, ornery ways. Harrington’s stubbornness is a thread woven through this novel as we uncover intimate family details and many of the reasons the Harrington family love and hate their patriarch. In spite of it all, they find ways to use these deeply rooted feelings to focus on, and thrive, becoming forces to contend with in their own families. A wonderful work of historical fiction for the generations – Natasha Ramsey
